Ravenclaw Tests of Logic

Brilliant, said Hermione. This isn't magic - it's logic.

Puzzle Twelve - Founders Statues - Solution Page

In the midst of London, carefully hidden from the eyes of Muggles, are the buildings and offices of the Ministry of Magic. One of the most important buildings there, not far from Parliament, is the Great Wizarding Library. Outside the Library are statues of the four Hogwarts founders (Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin). Each statue is made of a different material (bronze, stone, marble, and steel).

Can you figure out the order of the statues, from left to right, and which material each statue is made of?

  1. The stone statue is somewhere to the right of the statue of Godric Gryffindor.

  2. The marble statue is somewhere to the right of the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw.

  3. The statue on the far right is neither the statue of Salazar Slytherin nor the stone statue.

  4. The statue made of steel is somewhere to the left of the statue of Godric Gryffindor.

Solution:

The statue of Godric Gryffindor cannot be on the far right because the stone statue is to its right (clue 1), and it cannot be on the far left because the statue made of steel is to its left (clue 4). Thus, the statue of Godric Gryffindor must be one of the two middle statues - and because the stone statue also cannot be on the far right (clue 3), the stone statue must be in position 3 (second to right) and statue of Godric Gryffindor must be in poistion 2 (the second to the left).

If the Godric Gryffindor statue is in the second to left position, the steel statue must be in the far left position.

The statue on the far right cannot be Salazar Slytherin (clue 3), it cannot be Godric Gryffindor because he's in position 2, and it cannot be Rowena Ravenclaw because her statue has the marble statue to its right. So the statue on the far right must be Helga Hufflepuff.

The stone statue in position 3 cannot be the statue of Salazar Slytherin because the stone statue and the Slytherin statue are two different statues (clue 3). So this must be the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw, leaving the steel statue on the far left as the only possibility left for Salazar Slytherin.

The Rowena Ravenclaw statue must have the marble statue somewhere on the right, which means the statue of Helga Hufflepuff on the far right must be the marble statue. Since the Hufflepuff statue is marble, the Ravenclaw statue is stone, and the Slytherin statue is steel, the statue of Godric Gryffindor must be bronze.

To sum up:

Placement Hogwarts Founder Material
Far Left Salazar Slytherin steel
Second to Left Godric Gryffindor bronze
Second to Right Rowena Ravenclaw stone
Far Right Helga Hufflepuff marble
