Ravenclaw Tests of Logic

Brilliant, said Hermione. This isn't magic - it's logic.

Puzzle Eleven - Lockhart's Big Mess - Solution Page

As you can expect, after the pixie incident, Professor Lockhart had a wee bit of difficulty holding the attention of his classes. Indeed, on the day after, he absolutely couldn't control any of his Hufflepuff fourth years. There were three acts of misbehavior happening simultaneously all over the room! In one part of the room, a student was setting off small explosions with a wand. In another part, two students were enchanting a copy of "Magical Me" to read "Magical Moron." And in yet a third part of the classroom, a student was levitating a piece chalk to write rude words on the blackboard behind Lockhart's back. One of these acts of misbehavior was happenning on the left side of the classroom, another on the right side, and the last in the middle, in between the other two.

What made things worse is that Lockhart couldn't yet remember all of the students' names! He knew the students involved were named Ludwig, Marcus, Nadia, and Omar, but he didn't know which was which. Can you help him sort out which students are participating in which misbehavior, and where in the classroom each act of misbehavior is located?

  1. Ludwig and the student setting off explosions, in one order or another, are on the left and right sides of the classroom.

  2. Marcus is to the immediate right of of the student levitating the chalk.

  3. Nadia is on the right hand side of the classroom.

Solution:

Nadia is on the right hand side of the classroom (clue 3), either on her own or with one other student (as one of the acts of mischief involves two students).

Since Ludwig is either on the left or the right, with the other side being the student setting off explosions (clue 1), that means that either Ludwig is on the left with Nadia on the right setting off explosions on her own (since only one student is setting off explosions), or that Ludwig and Nadia are both on the right side enchanting the book (since two students are doing that) with someone else on the left setting off explosions.

In neither of those cases could Marcus be on the right hand side of the classroom. And Marcus can't be in the left hand side, because he's to the right of the student levitating the chalk. So Marcus must be in the center. And since he's in the center, and he's to the immediate right of the student levitating the chalk, that puts the student levitating the chalk is on the left hand side of the classroom.

Of the two possibilities for Ludwig mentioned above, only one is possible if the left hand side of the classroom has the student levitating the chalk - that is, that Ludwig is on the left (and thus levitating the chalk) and Nadia is on the right setting off explosions.

Thus, the students in the center must be enchanting the book - since there are two students, the other one besides Marcus doing that is the only student remaining, Omar.

To sum up:

Left Side: Ludwig levitating the chalk
Middle: Marcus and Omar enchanting the book
Right Side: Nadia setting off explosions
